In the first functional MRI brain scan study to investigate the impact of physical abuse and domestic violence on children, scientists at UCL in collaboration with the Anna Freud Centre, found that exposure to family violence was associated with increased brain activity in two specific brain areas (the anterior insula and the amygdala) when children viewed pictures of angry faces.
I still sometimes, decades later, jump out of my skin and sweat when I hear a car pull in my own driveway and the door slams shut. It used to mean a game of maneuvering was about to start…
“Where should I be in the house right now?”
“Will she think I’ve been doing something I shouldn’t be if I’m in my bedroom, even though my chores are done?”
“Did she have a good day at work or a bad day? Will I be coldly ignored or lashed out at?”
A brain has a hard time letting go of learned responses. A child should never learn combat-level defensiveness.
